Nascar needs a Rivalry!

In the 90’s NASCAR exploded. For the most part it was due to the fact you had a kid named Jeff Gordon that came into the sport, and he wasn’t you typical racer. He wasn’t from south like most drivers that had made it big in the sport. Gordon came in and a rivalry between him and the Intimidator Dale Earnhardt began. NASCAR fans didn’t like that a kid from California came in and started beating their beloved Earnhardt. Gordon coming into the sport brought a lot of young fans in, along with lots of new sponsors. It didn’t matter if Gordon and Earnhardt were battling in the back of the field, that’s where the fans were watching. Gordon and Earnhardt fans don’t mix with each other. That battle went on until Earnhardt was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001. Since that time NASCAR has been searching for that kind of rivalry. For a time you had Gordon vs. Earnhardt Jr., but Earnhardt Jr. has on very few occasions has Earnhardt Jr. been able to keep up with Gordon. Everyone said that Gordon had better equipment than Earnhardt Jr. and if they had the same equipment Earnhardt Jr. could beat him. In 2009 fans got the chance to see if Jr. could beat Gordon, when Earnhardt Jr. joined Hendrick motorsports and the two became teammates.

The answer to the question was NO! Earnhardt Jr. still couldn’t beat Gordon. For a while there was Biffle vs. Harvick, Edwards vs. Kenseth, Gordon vs. Kenseth, Keselowski vs. Edwards, but nothing has stuck. You need two big name drivers in the sport to have that rivalry. I am hoping that I am not getting to excited over this, but after the race Monday in Texas, I am hoping that a new rivalry has started. The rivalry that is Gordon vs. Johnson. Most Gordon fans now feel about Johnson the way Earnhardt Sr. fans felt about Gordon. Gordon brought this guy into Hendrick motorsports and is part owner of the number 48 team, and he is beating Gordon week end and week out. Fans have been wondering where is Jeff Gordon? Where is the driver that had the desire and drive to win every week? Over the past few weeks it’s looking as if that driver is back. This past Monday in Texas, Gordon and Johnson battled for the lead, and Gordon clearly had the better car. Gordon did not back down to Johnson, and that seemed to bother Johnson. Listening to his in car audio Johnson wasn’t to happy with Gordon. Johnson slammed into the side of Gordon’s car, which led to Johnson having a tire rub and having to make a pit stop. He blamed Gordon, even though he was the one that slammed into Gordon. Gordon said “four times getting a little mad there.” Listening to Gordon’s radio Monday made me see that he is more determined than ever to be number 1 on the track again. He is ready to take the throne and crown away from Johnson. NASCAR needs this to be a rivalry. A Gordon vs. Johnson rivalry could become a classic. Me as a NASCAR fan sure hopes so.
